English teaching, as a form of education, was first introduced into China by missionaries and had gradually become the most prominent feature of missionary school in the process of development. However, whether the church school English education derived from secularization of religion can be used for preaching and what the utility of it for preaching is, these two questions have been trying to be explained by the educational missionaries. The thesis takes the concept of "Secularization" existed in The Study of Religion as the breakthrough point and analyzes the implication of St. John’s English education.The thesis consists of four chapters:The first chapter stated the starting point of this thesis and reviewed some literature; The second chapter briefly introduced English education under the influence of missionary and Secularization; The third chapter introduced the sentiments of the educational missionaries about English education and emphatically discussed the necessity of English education in missionary work; The fourth chapter mainly expounded Francis Pott’s ideas and measures about English education; The dual attributes of St John’s English Education was analyzed, which showed the influence of the secular in the last chapter.
