As a branch of caricature, Comic has largely enriched the expressive patterns and the content of caricature. Modern Comic of Japan has typically imbibed much nutrition from modern arts constantly and has shaped its unique style of art and character in the course of its development, with more configurations of aesthetics and rich appreciative value expressed. This essay is going to proceed with its research and expatiation in two aspects, namely the appreciative value and aesthetic character of Japanese comics, aiming at strengthening the ability of appreciators to appreciate them.In the introduction, the influence of Japanese comics, as a popular culture, is summarized, and it points out the significance which results from fully inspecting the art of them, i.e. studying it from the angle of an aesthetic appreciation.In Chapter One, Comic is explicitly defined, the character of which is concluded, then followed by the introduction of its specific classification so as to initiate singly the research of comic of different varieties.In Chapter Two, its appreciative value is discussed and studied in terms of the configuration of reflective aesthetics and that of visual aesthetics. In the configuration of reflective aesthetics, the appreciative value of Japanese comics is discussed from the angle of its "philosophical reflection" , "content" and "appreciating psychology of appreciators" . However, in the configuration of visual aesthetics,its unique appreciative value is explored from the general integrity of comics and their intuitionist drawings. There are quite many sub-arguments in this chapter, which are the core of the whole essay. In Chapter Three, the appreciative character of the art of Japanese Comic is probed in view of its works and Japanese culture, which acts as another pivot of the essay. The disquisitive work is singly developed from three aspects as advances: 1. the appreciative character depicted in Japanese Comic as a plastic art;2. the appreciative character typical of nationality contained in the Japanese story cartoons;3. the literary character embodied in Japanese comics.In Chapter Four, as a conclusion, pointed out are the practical significance of this essay in view of an appreciative research of Japanese Comic and its deficiency.
