| Marina Lewycka(1946-)is a Ukrainian-British contemporary female writer.Her two novels,A Short History of Tractor in Ukrainan and Two Caravans have attracted wide attention and won many awards for their unique comedy style.Although both novels present a humorous and light writing style,the themes revealed are complex and profound,and the conflict and integration of the two bring different aesthetic effects.In the scope of contemporary world literature,they are relatively unique existences,and there is little research in domestic academic circles.Using the narrative of suffering as a starting point,the thesis focuses on a comprehensive and detailed textual analysis of two novels by Lewycka,using a close reading of the texts and interdisciplinary research methods to explain the theme of suffering embedded in the works in multiple dimensions and further explore the unique way of writing about suffering,on the basis of which the aesthetic significance of presenting suffering in the form of comedy is explored.This paper consists of five parts.Based on a brief introduction of Lewycka’s person and her works,the introduction further establishes the research ideas and significance on the basis of a clear research background.The first chapter reveals the heavy theme of suffering in Lewycka’s novel from the author’s experience and the background of the time,and classifies it into three types according to the different causes and manifestations of suffering: historical imprint,realistic questioning and subject trauma;the second chapter mainly explores Lewycka’s strategy of writing suffering,focusing on the comic expression of the novel from four aspects:characterization,plot setting,narrative style and language characteristics;The third chapter provides a discursive and organic synthesis of what has been said before,illustrating how the use of comedy to write about deep suffering is in essence a transcendent wisdom for human beings to come to terms with the complexities of history,and a textual strategy for resisting reality.In essence,it is not only a transcendent wisdom for human beings to reconcile with complex history,but also a textual strategy to resist reality.At the same time,humor is also a spiritual refuge for human survival,and the interaction of suffering and humor produces an aesthetic effect of mixed sorrow and joy,which is not only a transcendence of the narrative itself,but also a pursuit of the path to salvation.The concluding remarks will summarize the views of the whole text,overview the aesthetic value of suffering and humor,and reflect on the limitations of current humorous writing about suffering. |
