After the turmoil of the year of 1900, the government of the Qing Dynasty set about a reform movement on a grand scale including educational reform. As people known, Imperial Examination was a great impediment to a new schooling system in Late of the Qing Dynasty. Therefore the focus of the educational reform was to establish new schools by abolishing Imperial Examination, and the most popular issue at that time was how to get rid of the disadvantages of the Imperial Examination and make good use of its advantages. It resulted in Degree Awarding of the Imperial Examination that played the parts of both abolishing Imperial Examination and establishing new schools. Degree Awarding of the Imperial Examination which operated from 1901 to 1911 awarded lots of graduated students studying at home and abroad, linked up the Imperial Examination system and Civil-Service Examination system, and met the mental needs of traditional Chinese people. The study of the Degree Awarding of the Imperial Examination is not only the supplement for the research of Imperial Examination, but also is of value to comprehend the mental activities of social changes.This thesis includes four parts except preface.Part One explains the historical evolution of the Degree Awarding of the ImperialExamination, and divides it into four stages chronologically-beginning phrase,forming phase, practicing phase and ending phase.Part Two presents the specific implementation of the Degree Awarding of the Imperial Examination, and explains it from graduated students studying at home and abroad separately.Part Three represents the historical controversies about the Degree Awarding of the Imperial Examination, and generates it by two aspects-positive and negative.Part Four analyses the historical significance of the Degree Awarding of the ImperialExamination, mainly including three aspects-conforming to the historicaldevelopment, meeting the mental needs of traditional Chinese common people, giving a good play to the traditional function of education.
