| Qin Guan, a writer in North Song dynasty of China, enjoyed high reputation inChina's literary history for his limpid and euphemistic Ci, a kind of poem. In fact, healso accomplished in essays, yet few people noticed it partly and sadly because hisliterary fame was overwhelmed with Ci. Until recently, some scholars showedconcern with Qin Guan's essays, however, they did not expand the study, whichconsequently yielded discrete and unsystematic discussion.Argumentation dominated the essays of Qin Guan, which won him the greatestacclamation. His talent of argumentation is best demonstrated in his 50 politicalessays, wherein are his profound political opinions and which reflects his superbartistic achievement. The main part of this article is intended to make an overalloverview of his viewpoints and style and explore the social and individual causeslying behind. In addition, the Fu, a type of exuberant essay, produced by Qin Guan areof high literary value, however few they are. His meticulous essays, such as bambooscripts, preface and, biography, journal display the characteristic subtlety, elegantlifestyle and the real life state. Lastly, the remaining part of this article is an attempt toconclude and analyze these phenomena in order to illustrate the flexibility andvariability of Qin Guan's essays.With these reasons and despite of his accomplishment on Ci, Qin Guan could beidentified among the second or third essayists of the talent-laden flourishing Northand South Song dynasties. Both the argumentation and meticulous essays bear highartistic and aesthetic value. It is a shameful condition that his essays are neglected inthe literary circle. Thus, now t is time to assign him on a proper position in the historyof essay, and entitle him an "essayist".
