Li Yu was engaged in playwriting and stage guidance for a long time. He concluded a lotof narrative experience and methods in the large amount of stage practice and formed his owndrama theory, which was demonstrated in " XIAN QING OU ZHI ". Li Yu applied the theoryin his novel writing, creating many ingenious short stories in the vernacular and handed themdown in collections, such as "Shi Er Lou" and "Wu Sheng Xi" . Li Yu's formation of noveltheory and novel creation were closely connected with his drama stage experience and dramacreation theory. He believed that novels were dramas in silence and both of them hadsomething in common, that was, both of them focused on narration, characters and narrativelanguage. Novel theory born out of this mainly included two aspects: novel viewpoints andcreation theory. In his viewpoint that "novels are plays in silence", he attached greatimportance to fictional novel plots and image character creation, promoting the consciousnessof novel writing and affirming novels' status and role. Li Yu's main viewpoint in his novelcreation theory was that he was in pursuit of the integration of ingenuity and daily use and theintegration of structure and contents. Li Yu realized that the artistic reality must be based onlife reality. Only those ingenious novels based on daily life could be approved by readers andhanded down for a long time. Besides, Li Yu attached great importance to the structure ofstories, regarding it as the skeleton of stories.Closely related with Li Yu's novels was that a lot of narrative methods were applied in acertain perspective. Li Yu often created something unique and unexpected in the conclusionsof his novels. He told stories in a certain perspective, instead of narrative ways applied intraditional novels, in which stories were told by a well-informed narrator. That was not onlythe maturity of narrative techniques, but also the consciousness of those techniques, bringingsomething mysterious and wonderful aesthetic surprises to his novels. Besides, he achievedsome breakthroughs and creations in the forewords of traditional novels and quotations ofpoems.Another noteworthy point in Li Yu's novels was the literate taste and tendency. He tried toinject literate taste into the plots, narrative ways and character creations, making his novelsreadable and become closet works. In place of straightforward narration, he created moreliterate plots with more reader involvement. In place of shallow and vulgar comedies, heshowed thought-provoking comedy styles in more depth. In place of simple description ofcharacters, he crated well-developed three-dimensional figures.
