In recent years, Genre has become a popular notion in linguistic and applied linguistic studies. As "an insightful and thick description of academic and professional texts", it is "a powerful and useful tool to arrive at significant form—function correlations which can be utilized for a number of applied linguistic purposes" (Bhatia, 1993) The theories of genre and genre analysis have been applied to investigate various type of texts in different domains. However, little study has been carried out to investigate tourist-related texts. With rapid development of tourism all over the world, the genre of brief tourist information (BTI) has become ubiquitous. It gradually gains recognition from faculty of the tourist industry, as well as from everyman who is likely to travel. Therefore, a better understanding of this particular genre is quite necessary for the people who are about to extend it and also those who may become the receiver. This thesis attempts to define BTI text as a genre and establish a relation between its macro-sociocultural purposes and microstructures. In the main body of the thesis, firstly the BTI text is redefined in terms of genre theory and assumptions concerning the language features of this genre are made, based on the nature of it. Then an analysis within the framework of systemic-functional grammar is taken, especially in the interpersonal and textual aspects of language. Finally the findings emerging in the analysis are related with the previous assumption and the nature of the BTI text. The conclusion is that the microstructures of the genre are in service of its genre-mixing nature. As a particular genre in itself, BTI text has developed a specific way to express itself and to achieve its communicative purposes. Further, the paper claims that such analysis has important implications in language learning as well as in language teaching.
