Report On Translation Of Abstracts Of Research Articles In Iron Manufacture From The Perspective Of Functional Genre Analysis

Informatization is a development trend in the world.There are many ways of knowledge transmission,while translation plays an indispensable role in globalization.Publishing scientific papers is an important way to spread knowledge.In the translation of academic papers,the translation of abstracts is especially important.As the beginning of the papers,abstracts contain the main contents and creative viewpoints to help readers have a clear understanding of the papers.Abstracts in iron manufacture papers have their own unique characteristics,which are different from other disciplines,such as biomedicine and information engineering.Figuring out genre features and translation techniques of abstracts in this field is of great importance to both abstract writing and translation studies of them.Under the guidance of genre analysis and Halliday's systemic functional grammar,this report discusses the translation techniques of abstracts of scientific papers.The texts of this report are selected from abstracts scientific and technological papers in iron manufacture.The abstracts are divided into four major moves(introduction,method,result and conclusion),and the translation techniques used in the realization of the three metafunctions are discussed and summarized.In the translation practice,the translator found that due to the text feature of abstracts of iron manufacture,the moves are generally not strictly in accordance with the four-move structure,in which the content of introduction is less or omitted in some abstracts.In addition,the order of the moves is not completely in accordance with the four major moves.The translator should use amplification or omission in the actual translation practice.In order to realize the three metafunctions,the translator needs to be adaptive in the actual translation practice.Three metafunctions are realized in the four moves in different ways.In the realization of the ideational function,attention should be paid to the conversion of sentence components in transitivity system.The translation of passive voice should depend on the context.In the realization of interpersonal function,the translator focuses on the translation of modal verbs and the translation of personal pronouns.Different modality value of modal verbs and the interpersonal meanings that the translatorwants to achieve must be assured,so as to achieve the accuracy of translation of modal verbs and personal pronouns.In the realization of the textual function,the translator focuses on the natural flow from the given information to the new information.With the guidance of theme-rheme structure,the translation technique of shift is adopted in translation process.The connection mechanism between sentences should be assured.Grammatical metaphor is widely used in the realization of three metafunctions.In the grammatical metaphor,the translator transforms the English source texts into the congruent form,and then adjusts the semantic structure according to the context.
