In Chinese piano music history, the 20th century is regarded as the most important period, when the Chinese piano music began to bud and gardually prospered. From its development and composing theories and practice of different periods, it can be summed that the evolution of the Chinese piano music style includes several different developing stages, which show not only quite different recongnitions of the Chinese piano music styles but embody their different specific connotations, presenting a tendecy of continuous development and improvement. The budding stage or the embryo of composition (before 1949) witnesses that the Chinese piano musical productions are typical of national tunes—the so-called "Chinese Style", during which period the understanding of style is still in formality. The following 17 years is the first prospering period for Chinese piano music composition, during which period the traditional Chinese folk tunes and the production of melodies with national tunes come into Chinese piano music. Piano pieces transcriped from traditional music national exploration of harmony become the mainstream of this period. During the "Cultural Revolution", though the only composing form is transcriping national music for piano, its idealogical connotation has changed greatly, which is a turning point for piano music style. However, the recognition and understanding of style is still one-sided, just in formality. The Piano music composition is not freed from theshackles of idealogical thought until 1977 and it begins to be of individuality and variety. With it the understanding of "Chinese Style" of piano music is of multiplicity. This is the real prosperous and mature period of Chinese piano music production. After the efforts of serveral generations of composers, the style of Chinese piano music has been established in the formation and development of the 20th century piano music culture and it will have great effect on Chinese piano culture in the future. Even so, there is still a gap to fill up if the school of Chinese pianists hopes to have a space among world-famous pianists. Only when sticking to nationality, seeking the "Chinese Style" of piano music, combining western and Chinese composing skills, fully understanding and grasping the music connotation of Chinese school, constantly improving the composing theory system of "Chinese Style" and embodying a fresh style to the system in the collision between tradition and reality and combination of them, can lots of piano pieces with both typical Chinese style and strong period feel be produced so to gradually promote and form Chinese style piano music system or school.
