The 29th Olympic Games will be held in Beijing in 2008. The Olympics held every four years is a great event of worldwide sportsdom and a certain phenomenon of urban culture as well. Urban public Sculpture, a special form of art in urban public space, not only gives aesthetic feeling by its form but also brings about spiritual inspiration, that is, to call forth the aesthetic feeling from the thought, and to produce the "pleasure of reflection and criticism" as is said by Kant. Public Sculpture will play an important role in the figuration of a characteristic appearance of the Olympics hosting city in order to create a humanistic urban public space."The vagueness in objective and the confusion of measure" are problems of public sculpture in the Olympics hosting city which are in dire need of solution. They will affect the whole construction of the hosting city, Beijing. This dissertation deals with the organic combination of characters of the Olympic culture and the public sculpture from an angle of design and application. The role and function of public sculpture in the hosting city are analyzed in this dissertation, with references to the paradigms of Los Angeles and Barcelona, from the angles of legislation, planning, style and practical classification. For the success of the Olympics in Beijing in 2008, suggestions of public sculpture in the aspects of design and application are given here with excellent examples. Analysis of design and application of public sculpture is provided here aiming at the Olympic park, the central area of Olympic construction in Beijing.
