Chinese and Western drawing are two different systems which is influenced by two kinds ofdifferent modelling ideas.One of the important drawing manners is "line". The significance and theconnotation of the line have obvious difference.The value orientation of Chinese and Westerntraditional painting line theory have defined differences because they are all implicated with theline theory here and there.Therefore, as mentioned before,people can feel the theories are veryrich.Actually, it is a very difficult to measure or determine. In the basic Chinese and Western linetheories, inspecting their connotation of the line and clearly presenting its development vein andits value orientation is the goal of this article. The article attempts from the whole development ofChinese and Westernt fine arts which includes, comparison of theories using comparisonanalysis method from microscopic stratification and connotation, function and influence on theirtraditional line theory.Discusses the painting line theory of the value, the root and the theory whichproduce the present traditional line theory's clear appearance. To excavatat, comb and analys theline theory, to obtain the value orientation of Chinese painting line theory include ,the line shape,the vivid and the rhyme,the line formula and the line free sketch mentioned. The line shape, thevivid, the rhyme mentioned is from "the bone" of the painting theroy to excavate the significanceand the value of the line;The line formula theory is from the traditional painting theory to inspectthree big formulas in the line "the shape", "the principle"and "the appearance".Line free sketchtheory is from "the calligraphy and painting homology", "yishu ruhua" to "yihua mentioned ".Inspecting the traditional Chinese painting goal is with the line free sketch, the personalizationperformance, and a profounder spirit that contains and manifests the line theory.
