Academic management is the important mechanism for implementing academic activities, improving teaching quality and assuring administration efficiency. With the fast development of society and economy, and with the tendency of globalization in the realm of education, the establishment and improvement of the credit system in higher education becomes a necessity. Compared with the traditional academic year system, the credit system has proved to be advantageous in several aspects, such as teaching administration, management of students, course selection system, elastic length of schooling, etc. Therefore, the application of credit system is a natural tendency in response to the rapid developments of our country's socialist market economy, its related industries, and higher education. Of the credit system, some advantages have been realized and utilized, but there are still others that need further exploration.As an important component in the implementation of credit system, assessment plays a crucial role in the administration of higher education. On the one hand, a well-functioning assessment system may monitor the effectiveness of different aspects of teaching and learning activities, as a result of which, the quality of higher education is guaranteed. On the other hand, it may help promote the efficiency of the credit system as a whole. In practice, the essence of assessment is the evaluation of students'achievements in their academic curriculum, i.e. the measurement of the accomplishments of their work in specific courses after a certain period of learning. In this sense, the quality of achievement assessment system may have great impact on the administration of the credit system. This paper takes the achievement assessment of English majors under the credit system as the research subject, with the intention to reveal its inherent tendency in application, to pin down the qualities that should be possessed by achievement tests under the credit system, and to raise people's awareness of the differences between various types of testing.The first chapter introduces the details of credit system, including its definitions, characteristics, and development. The chapter also mentions the necessities of implementing the credit system in our country's higher education.In the second chapter an elaborate discussion is offered about the differences between the credit system and the academic year system, and the implication and significance of the application of the credit system for English majors are also pointed out.The third chapter is mainly about the interrelationship between the credit system and achievement assessment.
