Relevance, Cognitive Context And Translation Of News English

Relevance theory is a cognitive pragmatics theory which has great influence in the western world, but its influence has reached far beyond the field of pragmatics. With time going, pragmatic translation theory developed based on relevance theory is increasingly stressed by the western circle of translation studies. In our country, many linguists and scholars also write books or papers to introduce this theory and illustrate its enlightenment on translation practice. According to relevance theory, to correctly understand natural language, we have to seek relevance through context and inference. In translation, correct understanding and cognition of natural language is the premise of achieving pragmatic equivalence. As a result, relevance theory becomes a new theory to guide pragmatic translation.In modern times, international communication is becoming more and more frequent, in which transmission of information plays an essential role. In a specific way, news translation transmits information to all the readers rapidly and effectively. The main aim of news translation is transmitting information, and news has the characteristics of truthfulness, objectivity, and comprehensiveness. News concerns all fields of the society and the aims of news reports are different in view of different factors. However, we believe that news transmits the reporters' thoughts and feelings and therefore includes many subjective factors. The language that reporters choose reflects their communication intention. When translating news, the translator must understand the reporters' communicative intention and convey it to target readers, which will inevitably concern some concepts of relevance theory, such as inference and cognitive context.
