With the continuous development of economic globalization and information industrialization, the exchanges between China and the rest of the world are on the rise. The world needs to know more about China and vice versa. The transmission of information cannot go without news media. Therefore, news translation has become an important channel in promoting cultural exchanges and enhancing mutual understanding between China and the rest of the world. And in particular, the Chinese translation of English news plays a decisive role in following international affairs for Chinese readers and in strengthening China's cultural exchanges with other countries. In view of the objectivity, timeliness, diversity, popularity and other characteristics of news reports,as well as the differences between China and the West in terms of reporting methods, thinking habits and language expressions,a comprehensive and effective theory is required to guide the E-C news translation practice for better dissemination.Although the relevance theory was not put forward specifically for translation,it becomes one of the pragmatic theories with the greatest impact on translation.Relevance theory provides a macro-theoretical framework for news translation.Concepts such as ostensive-inferential communication, cognitive context and relevance can be used to explain translation phenomena in news translation, which helps the author fully consider the writer's intention and the target reader's cognitive context while maintaining the objectivity and authenticity of the news.In this case, via corresponding translation skills and strategies adopted by the translator, the target reader can obtain sufficient contextual effects without making unnecessary processing efforts, thus making it easier for successful E-C news translation. This report consists of four parts:Chapter One gives a general introduction of research background and significance.Chapter Two contains two parts. The first part lists all preparations made before translation which include the preparation of translation tools, textual analysis, the comparison of parallel texts and plan-making.And the second part describes the whole translation process.Chapter Three is the main body of this report, which covers the theoretical introduction and the practical application of the theory. The translator analyzes the factors affecting target reader's cognitive context under the framework of relevance theory from the following three aspects:lexical entry, encyclopedic entry and logical entry.A detailed analysis of different examples has been developed concerning the application of relevance theory in E-C news translation, which verifies the applicability of relevance theory to news translation.Chapter Four is a summary of translation practice, including the experience, enlightenment and shortage of the research.
