Foreign language educational linguistics is a systematic academic discipline specifically concerned with foreign language teaching and learning. It is tentatively established by some Chinese scholars with the enlightenment of educational linguistics. As the title of the discipline,"foreign language educational linguistics"represents truly and roundly the nature and content of the studies of foreign language teaching and learning. The title provides a necessary premise for the establishment of the system of this discipline and its independent status in academic fields.However, the title of"foreign language educational linguistics"is not known to many researchers in relevant academic fields; and it is basically an unfamiliar terminology to many foreign language teachers. In other cases, although many foreign language researchers know this term, yet they tend to use some too-general or too-material terms, like"applied linguistics","foreign language teaching and learning studies","foreign language pedagogy"etc. As to this problem, the thesis emphasizes the importance of using"foreign language educational linguistics"as the title of the discipline because"a correct title"is the premise for the establishment of academic systems.After the right choice of the discipline title, we take a brief survey of the theoretical and practical studies of foreign language teaching and learning, and we find out that a lot of studies within this field lack a unified academic criterion, and that there exists many repetitive studies on certain topics.In order to provide solutions to the two problems above, the thesis has the following basic aims: expounding the definition of foreign language educational linguistics, exploring the characteristics of the discipline and introducing a new theoretical model of the discipline.
