Assessing Foreign Language Student's Spoken Proficiency, written by Martin East,is an academic work about spoken proficiency assessment. It mainly illustrates the assessment innovation in foreign language teaching in New Zealand's senior high school. The language entails a feature of rigor, scientificity and accuracy. The translation thus contains practicality. This report mainly introduces the problems in the English-Chinese translation process of the academic work,as well as problem analysis and problem solution. The theoretical guide of the translation task is Newmark's communicative translation theory. This report contains five parts: Introduction,Analysis of the Source Text,Translation Process,Translation Strategies and Skills,Conclusion. As for difficulties on the lexical level, syntactical level and textual level, the report aims to effectively convey the information, and to provide target readers the same reading experience as that of original text readers by adopting some translation strategies and skills, such as literal translation, free translation, amplification and omission.I hope this translation report can provide experience and references for future translation of similar texts.
