Poetry is the treasure in literary realm for the description of man's existence with elaborate language and vivid image. Its glamour has attracted countless translators while it has puzzled them by the ever-lasting debate on translatability of poetry. According to traditional translating view, the translated text should be equivalent to the source text. However, the form of poetry in the translated version has been unavoidably changed, which seemingly leads to certain loss of its aesthetic quality. In spite of all these, many masterpieces of translated versions have been produced, and proved the glamour of poetry. This reality calls for the updated observation and theoretical interpretation. From the perspective of aesthetic quality of poetry, the thesis employs the Chinese traditional philosophical view on the relation among language, image and meaning as well as some other western aesthetic theories such as Hermeneutics, Gestalt theory, Reception Aesthetics and musical aesthetics to describe the internal rule of aesthetic reconstruction in poetry translation.During the analysis, some versions of Tang poems are selected as samples to illustrate the aesthetic reconstruction because the Tang poetry stands for the consummation of Chinese classical poetry with connotative language, rich images and colorful artistic attainments. For the treasury with rich aesthetic quality many translators focus their attention on translation of the Tang poetry. For example, Ezra Pound has borrowed Chinese foregrounding image into western poetry to advocate the imagism while Gary Snyder has made Chinese monk Hanshan well known among American youths by introducing Hanshan poetry into America and in the recent years Chinese culture has surged the popular trend in western world. In the modern times with more and more intimate cross-cultural exchange, the communication on aesthetics has been the tidal current, which accordingly calls for the updated interpretation with different perspectives to admit the effect of both the creation of translators and the reception of the readers as well as aesthetic presentation in the language. There are six parts in the thesis, including the introduction, conclusion and four... |
