Design realization is based on material. Without material, design will foreverstay at the conceiving stage, and never comes true. One of the most important featuresof design is its feasibility. Material is the substantial foundation of design. As materialkeeps developing and enriching, man's design ideas are inspired. On the other hand, the incessantly developing design ideas demand new material, and it acceleratesmaterial's developing. Since ancient time, for surviving or for art, our human beingshave been using appropriate material to express ourselves emotions, desires andideals. Whatever the purposes are, the process of finding and using the appropriatematerial is the expression of material aesthetics. In one word, material property is animportant element of design.Designer Ronarad said, "Design is an activity that one function is achieved bypresenting man's own ideas through material." From the human's history, we caneasily find out that at any time, in any society, material always is designers' favorite, for design contents are created in terms of material. And the expression of thematerial aesthetics is found and developed by designers after thousands ofexperiments and analysis. As an excellent designer, one needs to do well in knowingthe foundation of the material. Meanwhile, the most important things are to be goodat discovering the beauty and deep concepts of material, manipulating material as hiswish freely, presenting the external characters and utilizing its internal characteristicscompletely. Emphasizing "thinking through material" is emphasizing the role of thematerial in design. Using material to expressing our emotions and intentions maybring new changes of design concepts. The main contents in this paper are:In chapter 1, we introduce the purpose and meaning of this selected subject ofthis paper, as well as the national and international relative research situation anddevelopment;then we make the research direction clear. Currently there is not asystematic elucidation of material utilization in art design, nor the systematicdiscussion of the material aesthetics. The topics about material in published articlesare non-concentrated, and show up corresponding to the specific topic. Most of themjust illustrated one specific point of one material. The unique understanding andthinking is needed. In order to get it, focusing on material is an effective method.Since everyone is completely free to select and manipulate material, then personalcharacteristics and interesting can be presented in the enough space. The perfectpresentation of material property can have a strong visual impression. This is anon-neglected factor. Hence, we get conclusion that it is an eternal subject to studythe material properties. In chapter2, we discuss what is material;what is the material classification;whatis material property;and what is the relation between material property and art design. These concepts and relations are defined and analyzed so that the subject of this papercan be further developed. There is a very important point that the material is dividedinto two categories, i.e. substantial material property and conceptual material property. The details about them are elaborated in this chapter. We believe that any further stepdevelopment is based on the clarification of these definitions. In chapter3, based on huge information from the literature, we summarize that insome point of view, we can say, the history of human being's development iscorresponding to the history of material development. In art design, people always tryto do the best to present art by completely utilizing material property. In order toperfect material property, advanced technology is developed so that the materialproperty can be fully used. On the other hand, a number of new material is createdand new material properties are obtained and utilized in design. Our human beingexperienced Stone Age, brazen age, Iron Age, industrial age, and post-industrial orinformation age. During this long history, every new material appearance brings thechanges in human's development. The history of material development becomes aproof of human's development and parallel human's history. This is the reason that inthe research of human's development, the appearances of new material are often beenas a milestone. From this point of view, the discovery of material property is also ahistorical procedure. Hence, it is necessary to know about the material developmenthistory. In chapter 4, as an important factor to present design, material property can besensed. The feeling of material property becomes an important method and content tounderstand, to find and to utilize material property. Various shapes and colors of thematerial include design language of expressing emotion. A good designer should begood at discovering material property, dare to break limitation, and be willing touncover a new meaning to the material. We know that the knowledge of materialproperty can not be apart from sensation. The sensation is a connection betweenhuman being and external world. Without sensation, we can not hear voice, experience temperature. In one world, the sensation is the thing through which weconnection with outside world and to what we want to do. Therefore, we use lots ofexamples to illustrate that the visual and sensatory function of material property arevery important parts in art design. In chapter 5, we summarize above studies. By numbers of examples, weillustrate the usage of nature properties, technological properties, social properties, and conceptual properties of material in are design. We realize that every kind ofmaterial has its own character. Different material has different beauty, such assplendor of gold, the nobleness of silver, sedation of brazen, the brightness ofstainless steel. Different material attribution has different beauty appreciation. Thedifferent quality and luster of material shows special meaning of its characteristicsand connotation. In chapter 6, we make conclusion that studying, understanding, and utilizingmaterial property can inspire all creative thinking so that we can have obviouscreation and imagination in our design products. Meanwhile, to express the beauty ofmaterial property does not depend on the price of material, but exist in using materialreasonably, and creatively.
