Transformation Of Marriage Custom During The Time Of Republic Of China

During the period of the Republic of China, China began to change from tradition to modern when carried out the transition.It was the era when the old ways of life was discarded in stead of the new. People chose the different life style according to the new ideal and the value orientation,so folk custom took on a new look. The changes of marriage custom had two respects:First of all, it was the change of the marriage ideal. Marriage ideal referred to general standard of choosing spouse and marriage ideal of consumption, and it played a controlling and leading role in the marriage.The change of the marriage ideal was profound and it could embody the intensity of the social change.In the Qing Dynasty the marriage depended on the parents' orders, the matchmakers' words and well-matched social and economic status.After the Revolution of 1911 wined, the traditional ethic ideal began to change under the impact of ideals such as the thoughts of human rights, democracy, freedom of capitalist class ,etc. People began to cross over the limit of family status.The marriage that was arranged by parents' order and the matchmakers' word was not regarded as the gods' word again. So yong people who realized the importance of the independent marriage pursued the freedom of choosing their spouses at will. At the same time, because of the invasion of the western capitalism and the development of commodity economy, high luxurious became social general phenomenon.Secondly, it was the change of the etiquette and custom of the marriage .First , it was the transition from tradition to modern. It was true that Six gifts were still the cores of traditional marriage customs, but the name and the form of Six gifts was not as former to some extent.
