Traditionally, translation is regarded as an activity of converting one language into another. In recent years, translation theorists and translators begin to take translation as an activity of cultural exchange, that is, it is not only a linguistic transformation, but essentially a cultural communication. My thesis discusses the importance of studying culture in translaiton, the criteria of translation from a cultural perspective and some commonly used translation strategies and methods. It aims to explore a balancing point among so many translation strategies, to transfer more accurate and sufficient cultural information with TL, and to make translation activity be the bridge in intercultural communication in real sense.Chapter One introduces the development of translation study—how the pure linguistic activity was turned into cultural study, and puts forward the new requirements for a translator.Chapter Two discusses the necessity of studying culture in translation. Actually different theorists put forward different definitions of culture in different study fields. But they have a common point, that is, culture is closely related to human beings.Chapter Three puts up the criteria of translation from the point of view of cultural exchange,that is, the informativeness and effectiveness of the transferred cultural messages. Informativeness requires us to convey as many cultural messages as possible from the SL text to the TL text. To be informative, the translator should avoid misunderstanding, replacing, adding and missing SL cultural messages at random.
