As a well-known writer in Chinese Literature, Fangfang is considered as a writer of the school of the neo-realistic novel, as a result of the publication of her medium length novel Scenery in 1987. Critics mostly focus on her neorealistic writing style such as 'zero emotion writing', 'naturalism', 'original life status' and ' traditional life style' etc. In her novels, however, the stories are ordinary and unadorned and leave the readers with a feeling of inexorable sadness. They imply a profound exploration into the tragedy of the human condition. Despite a prosaic writing style, Fangfang' s novels are heavy and serious and evoke a strong, solemn and tragic feeling in the reader.By examining the plentiful commentaries on daily life, by studying the characters' tragic personalities and the originality of her novels, the study attempts to unveil the profound tragedies lying beneath the surface of the novels. The essay constitutes a prelude, speeches and three other parts. The prelude clearly probes the tragedy implied in Fangfang' s novels and demonstrates, in support, examples of those tragedies. The heart of the study discusses the hidden tragedy in her novels from three angles.
