This thesis is about the English and Chinese rhetorical figures. It tries to improve the translating strategies through the comparative study of English and Chinese rhetorical figures.The whole thesis is divided into seven parts. The first part is the introduction. It tells the reason why I adopt the comparative study to discuss translation, and why I choose rhetorical figures as the objects to deal with.The second part is about the classification of rhetorical figures. It introduces the definitions of rhetorical figures in the two languages, the criteria for the classification and a literature review of the classification. At last it provides the accepted classification toward translation.The third part is about the translation theory. Translation equivalence is the theoretical basis, especially Mona Baker's equivalence principles.The fourth part compares the English and Chinese phonetic rhetorical figures and provides the translating strategies. It is impossible to discuss all the rhetorical figures, so in the paper each category only two kinds of rhetorical figures are compared. In this part they are alliteration and shuang sheng(双声), onomatopoeia and ni sheng (拟声)The fifth part focuses on the English and Chinese lexical rhetorical figures: metaphor and an yu (暗喻) , pun and shuang guan (双关) .The sixth part discusses the English and Chinese syntactical rhetorical figures, the figures of structure. Antithesis and dui ou (对偶) , parallelism and pai bi (排比) are the most common ones.The last part of this thesis is the conclusion. Comparative study is necessary for translation. And through the comparative study of English and Chinese rhetorical figures, a better understanding of both languages and smoother translation would beobtained.
