Figures of speech, an indispensable branch in rhetoric, are language patterns gained from the creative use of popular language in special contexts, which have particular rhetorical functions. In another words, figures of speech are special language patterns. In some aspects, whether semantically or syntactically, the use of figures of speech is the deviation from normal language patterns, which bears particular intentions.The so-called deviation is the variant of the normal language structures and patterns. Deviated language gained through appropriate language skills can help to produce certain aesthetic effects. Therefore, deviation is a very important strategy to pursue beauty. This thesis attempts to make some contrastive studies on the basis of this important strategy, about some figures of speech in English and Chinese.English and Chinese belong to different language families. Between these two languages, there are great disparities in word formation, sentence structure, word order and so on. However, most of the commonly used figures of speech in English can find the same or similar means of conveyance in Chinese. Even if the classification or definition of some figures of speech seems to differ greatly in English and Chinese, both of these two languages share the same or similar strategies in the pursuit of beauty, thus provides the basis for this contrastive study.In spite of the superficial similarities, different cultural backgrounds...
