| As the primary media for the public to know about the sports events, sports news translation among different languages is necessary and inevitable; nonetheless, currently, domestic and foreign studies on this field are concentrated on sports news, or news translation, and sports news translation study is relatively rare. The thesis is aimed to discover the characteristics of the E-C translation of sports news and explore the corresponding translation approaches according to Peter Newmark’s theory of text type as well as communicative translation and semantic translation. Two main parts are discussed in this thesis: words and phrases, context, and those two parts are further divided into six sections: terminologies, customary expressions, direct speech, culture-loaded words, metonymies, together with the study of context; meanwhile, based on Newmark’s translation theory and those six sections, corresponding translation approaches which are fairly effective are put forward. On the basis of empirical studies, the present author believes that in sports news translation, the translator must not only make allowance for the common features of informative text, but should also have the expressive and vocative functions in mind. Therefore, semantic translation is as important as communicative translation in the translation of sports news. |
