Based on existing theories and researches, the present study investigated the characteristic of middle school-aged children's empathy and social adaptation and the relation between the two above variables. The first purpose of the project is to describe the character and the development of middle school-aged children's empathy. The second purpose is to analyze the general development of social adaptation, such as emotion mental health and interpersonal relation. At last, the relation between empathy and social adaptation is explored.956 middle school-aged children from four elementary school and middle schools of Jinan and Jining are selected in the investigation. This thesis adopts the method of questionnaire and social measurement and described a full picture of the empathy as well as the average level of social adaptation. Then we try to find the relationship between them.The result showed that: 1 Girls have the significant higher ability of empathy and level of empathy response than boys have. The middle school students' ability of empathy are higher than the elementary school students' . Negative correlations are found between the empathy ability and empathy response. The developments of them are out of line. If the quality of empathy emotion is similar to children's self emotion, children have higher level of empathy response. Children have higher level of empathy response in the situations of negative empathy. 2 Girls have better conditions of general emotion and mental health than boy. Children in Grade 2 of middle school have worse conditions of general emotion and mental health than other grades. 3 Positive correlations are found between the empathy ability, the empathy response and interpersonal relationship. The interaction of the empathy ability and the empathy response to interpersonal relationship is significant. 4 Positive correlations are found between the empathy ability, the empathy response and positive emotion.
