Gender In Translation

Translation studies is an interdisciplinary field; it is open to other academic disciplines and have advanced itself by absorbing new elements positively. After the first "linguistic turn" in the 1960s, translation studies experienced "the cultural turn" in the 1980s. This significant turn has brought about more dimensions for translation studies and feminism is one of the inspiring perspectives. As a result of the rapid development of women's movement, "gender" has become the focus of feminism. As a cultural construct, gender has also come into the sight of translation studies. The encounter between gender studies and translation studies has aroused exciting discussions about gender issues in the field of translation, and women translators have been unearthed and reread for the first time in history. In the light of gender, translation studies has been redefined and is developing into a new height.Enlightened by gender studies in feminism, this thesis attempts to focus on the role of gender in translation by making an interdisciplinary research. In the cultural background, gender issues in translation are probed and the heritage of double inferiority, i.e. woman is inferior to man and the translator is inferior to the author, confronted by women translators is subverted through a case study on Yang Bi's translation of Thackeray's Vanity Fair.
