The Manifestation Of Feminist Thoughts Of Yang Bi’s Translation Of Vanity Fair

Along with the "cultural turn" appearing in the translation study field, the external factors including the culture, economy and politics etc. have attracted the attention of more and more translation researchers. In the mid-20th century, as the prosperous development of feminism, gender, as part of the cultural identity, was also paid attention to by the translation researchers. Therefore, the feminist translation theory was produced as the latest achievement in the translation field was combined with the feminism.According to the viewpoints of the feminist translation theory, language has a close relationship with the gender. The female has its unique characteristics in the aspects of language use and these characteristics are always shown unconsciously in the process of translation. At the same time, the feminist translators always emphasize the equal social position between man and woman, so they would rewrite the expressions depreciating female in the process of translating. Therefore, their actions not only challenge the traditional translation theory but also bring new perspective into the translation study.The thesis aims to study Yang Bi’s Chinese version of Vanity Fair from the perspective of feminist translation theory. Vanity Fair is the classical work of William Makepeace Thackeray, a reality criticizing writer. Taking the destinies of the two females as the clue, the work describes in detail the subsistence state of the female and their personal characters in the world dominated by the male. The thesis also selects another Chinese version translated by the male translator Peng Changj iang for comparison with Yang Bi’s translation. Through detailed comparative study and concrete example analyzing, the thesis finds that the feminist translation thought is clearly shown in Yang Bi’s translation of Vanity Fair.
