Shih Baozhi was a famous and eminent monk in Qi and Liang Dynasty .About him,there have been a great deal of tales when he was alive. After his death,these tales kept changing with the time-going and the changes of ideology. A case in point is the different records of Shih Baozhi's bibliography during the Liang and Song Dynasty.These records are quite different and can be explained in different ways.For each piece of record,true history and magic tales exist at the same time. There are various errors in the late recordings of Shih Baozhi' biography and the co-existance of history and tales can apprently be seen in them. As a result, they should be carefully analyzed and selected before being quoted in research paper.The paper try to compare and analyse these records and tell a true history of Shih Baozhi.Shih Baozhi was believed to be one of representatives of Eleven-faces Avalokitesvara through the Tang and Song Dynasty. The belief had undergone a series of transformations and during the progress several tales related to it had been created at different times. Consequently,we shouldn't discuss the belief and tales in a mixed way. The mixing state reflects complicated mutual inflences between the belief and the tales.A series of poems recorded in the Jing-de Chuan Deng Lu(景德傅燈錄), titled as Shih Baozhi's works, were actually not composed by him. In my opinion, they are written by some monks of Hongzhou chan school rising in the middle Tang Dynasty.
