This dissertation discusses volitional and non-volitional verbs on the basis of the research of Mr. Ma Qingzhu. In the syntax theory language is always in static state as well as in dynamic state. Some verbs boast the feature of volitional or non-volitional meaning in static state, while the semantic feature is about to be concealed or revealed in dynamic state.The objective of this dissertation is to discuss the concealing and revealing of the volitional meaning of the verbs. In the light of the semantic features and the grammatical forms of the verbs, we try to find out what kind of syntax condition will influence the concealing and revealing of the volitional meaning of the verbs, and the volitional meaning feature can display what kind of hierarchy in certain syntax condition etc. Another objective is to testify the topic in syntax grammar that the volitional category can impose the restriction on the Chinese syntax, thus enriching the research of the relative field.The key tasks of the dissertation are as follows:Chapter one discusses whether the volitional meaning of a verb is stable. Before the in-depth research, the dissertation has divided the verbs into two categories (the volitional and non-volitional verb) and listed them on the basis of the previous researches. Then the dissertation rules out what kind of semantic type of a verb can easily be figured out as a volitional verb.Chapter two, which raises the concept of the "consecutive volitional system of a verb", puts forward the standards to judge whether a verb has strong volitional meaning or not. We found the language features of agentive action noun, tense and aspect of the verb and other elements that play important role in the stability of language meaning of the verbs.Chapter three discusses how the sentence mode types influence the concealing and revealing of the volitional meaning. We have classified the Imperative sentence and Declarative sentence and have found that volitional meaning seems much stronger in the desiderative sentence and affirmative imperative sentence while much vaguer in the patterns to express the regular activity and natural laws etc.Chapter four has sorted out several special kinds of sentence patterns to see whether can influence the volitional meaning of a verb. The verb in a "ba" sentence pattern seems to carry more volitional meaning than "bei" sentence pattern and common "subject-predicate" structure. The V1 and V2 in the pivotal sentence and Verb series sentence always boast different degree of volitional meaning and in an existential sentence it is always very vague.Chapter five chooses the typical words or phrases that can influence the volitional meaning of a verb to discuss the topic. The position of complete subject decides whether some agentive action nouns have concealing and revealing of volitional meaning.
