Vocabulary is one of the important parts that compose children' s language ability, while pronoun is the very important kind of one' s vocabulary. If we examine children' s language ability, we cannot ignore children' s pronouns. Children with mental retardation are no exception. The results of pre-researches suggested that the vocabulary ability of children with mental retardation is behind that of normal children who are mental age matched. Children with mental retardation who have higher IQ have better vocabulary ability. But the conclusion was drawn from the general regular pattern of mental retardation children' s vocabulary ability. Referring to the pronouns of children with moderate mental retardation, it leaves more questions. Compared to normal children who are mental age matched, is the pronouns ability of children with moderate mental retardation lag behind? Is their pronouns ability related to their IQ? If it is not, then which factors are related to? In addition, pronouns are divided into personal, demonstrative and interrogative pronouns. And is there any difference among the ability of three kinds of pronouns?For solving above questions, this paper examined the pronouns ability of 43 children with moderate mental retardation in Shanghai, and compared to that of normal children who are mental age matched. The results suggest that the pronouns ability of children with moderate mental retardation lag far behind that of normal children, and their comprehension capability are better than their expression capability. There is no much difference among their comprehension capability of three kinds of pronouns. But expression capability of interrogative pronouns are behind personal pronouns.
