After fifty years' development, the former European Coal and Steel Community became the nowadays European union, and the numbers of its member states has increased from 6 to 25. The European integration has already extended to the cooperation on a supranational level, and this includes the foundation of the supranational institutions, the circulation of the euro, the common foreign and defense policy. However, the most notable development is the construction of a common European identity, which together with the European multicultural policy, facing the pressure of the cultural globalization and hegemony plays a very important role in the process of further integration of the EU.The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one introduces the purpose and fundamental construction of the thesis. Chapter two is literature review, where the basic knowledge and relevant theories are discussed. Chapter three is based on a substantive analysis to the European multicultural policy, and it is actually a research on the feasibility of carrying forward multiculturalism in Europe. In term of the European history and the evolution of the politics in Europe, chapter four analyzes the formation of the European identity. Conclusion was made in chapter five, and it contains a rational investigation into the influence of the EU's multicultural policy and the European identity: they not only contribute to the development of the European Union, but they are also important forces of keeping the world peace and equality.Through its multicultural policy, the EU promotes the cultural assimilation among its member states and it also accumulates a lot of valuable experiences in the process of integrating the Europe.
