Perennial art exhibitions, like the Biennial,Triennial and Documenta, have become the grandest events of the contemporary art,as well as a popular topic in the area of art study. It provides a global transcultural stage for the world of contemporary art,and becomes an art testing ground which differs from the traditional art institutions and consequently hasa large scale, high standard, wide influence and high timeliness. The increasingly popular perennial exhibition not only wields its influence in the realm of art,but also becomes a platform for the exchange of political and cultural thoughts.Based on the hypothesis of "the art perennial exhibition has become a very useful'weapon' for the establishment, remodeling and identification of cultural identity",this article has taken the well-known European art perennial exhibitions with historical accumulation as the objects of study, and is trying to explore how these art perennial exhibitions have reflected the change of Europe's cultural identity.Europe,as the origin of art perennial exhibition and the beginning of its globalizationprocess, has always been at the world's leading edge for the practice of art and political integration. This article takes Europe as the geographical range, and tries to develop a clearer picture about the social and cultural role of art perennial exhibitions.
