Du Mu was a famous poet of the later Tang Dynasty. This thesis aims to do a research on his poems by describing his life in Chang'an in details, so that the social visage of the late Tang Phase and his psychosis under the great historical background could be unfolded more truly.In order to understand Du Mu's activities in Chang'an better, first of all, the author divides his life in the capital city into three stages: 1. Du Mu's origin and childhood;2. Attending an examination of selecting virtuous person for giving advice to the emperor;3. Du Mu's holding office in Chang'an. Secondly, the reality is reflected by the content of the works which is written in Chang'an and describes Chang'an: Separatist warlord regimes, Tubo and Huihe's military invasion, political struggle in royal government, the decadent and dissolute life of the ruling class, the painful life of palace maids. In addition, Du Mu wrote many poems chanting history and describing natural landscapes of Chang'an. Besides, he wrote several works of missing hometown outside of Chang'an in which conveyed his deep love to homeland.The thesis mirrors Du Mu's emotional shifts by his works and reflects the declining reality of the later Tang Dynasty that casts a big shadow on his mind. Thereby it expounds the life of Chang'an that has an influence on his literature.
