The Linguistic Mistranslation In Katherine Mansfield's Stream Of Consciousness

The thesis begins with the linguistic feature of stream of consciousness in Katherine Mansfield's short stories, especially in word, word order, modifier order, person of view, register and speech act, followed by a comparative and contrastive study of the linguistic feature between English and Chinese texts. The paper points out that the linguistic mistranslation in target text doesn't full represent the linguistic feature of modernism and the character's inner world in source target, thus being unable to reach the linguistic and functional equivalence.In Katherine Mansfield's stream of consciousness, word is simple and colloquial and mentally associative in the character's memory, dream and illusion. The translator should make sure word hierarchy of formality and keep the linguistic feature rather than translate word style into complex and written from the narrative person of view to show the character's physical world. In addition, the linguistic organization in source text breaks the conventional rules of grammar and, with the broken fragment, truly represents the character's stream of consciousness and inner world. However, the translator, influenced by the conventional thinking style, artificially adjusts word order, modifier order and person of view, and unilaterally seeks for the linguistic regularity, integrality and logicality. At the same time, register and speech act are destroyed on the whole.In all, Katherine Mansfield breaks the writing skill of realism, being unique in word, word order, modifier order, person of view, register and speech act. The translator should not domesticate the version for cohesion unilaterally (smoothness), but foreignize the version appropriately and keeps the linguistic feature (faithfulness), thus reaching the linguistic and functional equivalence.
