Rhetorical Differences In C-E And E-C Translation

Translation is a way to exchange message between two languages and two cultures. Due to cultural disparities, in translating some effects of the original text, especially the rhetorical effect, are often lost. This paper is a study of the rhetorical differences in C/E and E/C translation. It tries to resolve this problem with the help of Translation Equivalence. First of all, after reviewing the statements by both Chinese and Western scholars, this paper brings the fact to light: language and culture are interdependent and inter-influenced with each other. Then, it elaborates cultural differences between English and Chinese and their respective influences on rhetorical languages.In C-E and E-C translation, equivalence is not only an ideal aim for translators, but also practical. Through analyzing some examples of C-E and E-C rhetorical translation, this paper reaches to the conclusion that in order to lessen the loss of rhetorical effects, translation equivalence can be taken as the standard for translating rhetorical languages. Lastly, some concrete methods and approaches are summerized. There are four main methods in dealing with the problem of rhetorical differences in translation: literal translation, free translation, substitution, literal translation adding notes.
