Multinational enterprises are indispensable participants in the globalization process of the world.How managers in multinational enterprises play their role in the cross-cultural environment has also become a topic of concern for scholars.Managing Cultural Differences(Ninth Edition)is an economic management text that imparts cross-cultural management experience and is also served as a textbook in some MBA programs.This report on English-Chinese translation takes Chapters Five and Six of Managing Cultural Differences(Ninth Edition)as the research object.In the process of translation,the author,under the guidance of Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory,based on the features of the source text,adopted the corresponding translation methods,striving to reproduce the information of the source language in the most appropriate,natural and equivalent language,so as to achieve the functional equivalence between the original text and the translation.The report consists of five chapters.Chapter One introduces the background,objective and significance of the translation project.Chapter two analyzes the main language features of the source text,including plenty of slang expressions and nominalization structures at the lexical level,abundant complex sentences and passive voice sentences at the syntactic level,the noticeable usage of substitution and parallel structures at the discourse level.Chapter Three is the theoretical basis.In this part,the author introduces the development and important concepts of Nida's functional equivalence theory,and illustrates the feasibility of applying functional equivalence theory to guide the translation of the source text.Chapter Four is case analysis,which explores specific methods employed in translation,such as liberal translation,amplification,division,recombination,voice conversion,repetition of substitution parts and retention of parallel structures to achieve functional equivalence at the lexical,syntactic and discourse levels.In the conclusion part,Chapter Five,the author shares inspirations obtained through this translation project,and points out the unresolved problems in the report.Through the analysis of specific cases in this report,the translator explores how to use translation methods to achieve functional equivalence in the translation of economicmanagement text,hoping that this report may provide some references for the scholars who devote to translating and studying this type of texts.
