In recent years,Russia, the successor to the Soviet Union, has achieved tremendous progress in military construction, especially in military education.Since his taking office as Russian president,Putin has repeatedly reformed the military education system in terms of its structure, composition and scale,as well as its recruiting system. At present, the quality of Russian military education is among the top in the world. In order to attract more Russian citizens to study in higher military education institutions, the Russian Ministry of Defense has drafted and released a series of recruiting materials. One of these is “There is such a profession – to defend the motherland”,which is published by the General Directorate of Russian Ministry of Defense to explain and facilitate the recruiting procedure, targeting Russian citizens who intend to enter higher military education institutions. This translation report is based on the translation of the first, second and third chapters of the aforementioned material. In these chapters, there is a detailed and clear description of the education and enrollment of higher military academies of the Russian Ministry of Defense.Translation and research on this field could facilitate the development of China's own military education. The selected materials are abundant with military terms and figures of speech. Thus,in order to represent the communicative function and linguistic features of the original material in Chinese, the translator applies Komissarov's translation equivalence theory and Barhudarov's translation transformation theory as the guiding principles during the translation practice. The translator hopes that the translation of the selected materials can enlarge the application of these theories in practice so as to facilitate the development of translation theory and practice. This report consists of 9 sections: Introduction,Chapter I-V,Conclusion,Bibliography,and Appendix. The Introduction briefs on the context of the selected materials and the significance of this translation,as well as its meaning.Chapter 1 provides an overview of the selected materials, including the original content, and some examples of the original language styles and rhetorical features.Chapter 2 focuses on the practice process which consists of three parts. In the first part, there is a detailed description of the pre-translation preparation;in the second part, there is a description of the establishment and application of the translation database based on machine-assisted software;in the third part, the article focuses on proof reading after translation.Chapter 3 analyzes in detail the problems and difficulties encountered during the translation. After their analysis, solutions are also provided.Chapter 4 systematically introduces the emergence and development of equivalence theory of translation in Russia, focusing on Komissarov's translation equivalence theory and Barhudarov's translation transformation theory, both of which guide this translation work.Chapter 5 focuses on the application of these two translation theories in practice with detailed case studies.Under their theoretical guidance, the translation methods and techniques used during the practice process could be justified. Thus,it shows the the rationality and applicability of the selected theory to this translation project. The Conclusion summarizes the experiences and achievements obtained in the process, and points out that some problems are still to be solved.
