| As the development of economy tends to integrate and globalize, the need of cross-cultural communication is increasing at a fast speed. More and more people are learning foreign languages and reading books about other cultures to be able to conduct global communication well. Meanwhile, various books about multiple aspects of literature, history, education, business, and politics are translated to enhance people's understanding and speed up the process of communication. However, as language, culture and translation are very closely tied to one another, translators meet many challenges arising from culture differences. Sometimes, they just can't find the corresponding words in the target languages and they are missing or overlapping in the culture. To avoid culture shock, translation mistakes and misunderstandings, linguists and transition scholars have put forward various cultural translation strategies. Among them the theory of translation equivalence has attracted much attention and becomes a very influential approach because of its special communicative perspective.In recent years, as China stands out as a powerful economic country and is attracting more foreign investments, international business gains its importance and attention. Large volumes of English business books are translated into Chinese and many more books are published to teach people how to do business with people from English-speaking countries. In the past people thought that business translation is a simple task that involves only formal and literal translation, and that anyone who is bilingual and command enough knowledge can easily fulfill the task. However, quite to our surprise translators encounter substantial difficulties in achieving equivalence in business English translation. The problem lies in that many people fail to realize even though business translation may not be as heavily culture-loaded as literature translation, it is still culture-specific and requires translators to be aware of the many cultural factors to avoid false equivalence. Through a detailed analysis of the various non-equivalent cases in business translation between English and Chinese duo to culture-specific reasons, this paper aims to help the readers to get a better understanding of business translation, cultivate culture awareness in business translation and conduct more research in this field. |
