Up to now, a lot of researches on ECs have been conducted. However, most of them are on PRO or pro or variable, not much attention has been paid to NP-trace, home or abroad. Some of the researches have mentioned NP-trace. but it takes only quite a small part, such as Xu Liejiong (1986), C. - T. James Huang (1987). Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to provide a relatively more complete study on properties of NP-trace in both the English language and the Chinese language. This will be realized from two perspectives:Firstly, a comparative study of NP-trace within the English language will be conducted. Comparison is always a good means for better understanding. Here, the comparison will be made from three respects.1> The comparison between NP-trace and lexical anaphor. NP-trace is said tobe equivalent to lexical anaphor. However, through the comparative investigation,we will find that they are not totally equal; there are differences as well assimilarities between them.2> The comparison between NP-trace and PRO. Though both are ECs, theremust be something similar or different between NP-trace and PRO.3> The comparison between NP-trace and variable. Both of the two are leftbehind by movement, but certainly, different types of movement.
