| Translation is the transmission of the message between different languages. It is a kind of cross-language and cross-culture activity. Since translation involves two kinds of different languages and different cultures, how can readers judge the translated works, or what are the criteria for translation? It is a controversial topic in the translation circles. And the criterion of "equivalence" is one of the most important concepts. The present author will analyze the translatable and untranslatable factors in Chinese classical poetry from both the linguistic and the cultural aspects so as to find out whether Chinese classical poetry is translatable or not and to further prove the limitation of the equivalent translation theory. This thesis consists of five parts.In the Introduction, the author first lists the different definitions of "translation" in different periods, and points out that "equivalent translation" is the key concept in the translation theories. Then the author puts forward the research questions: (1) Can Chinese classical poetry be translated or not? If it can be translated, in what respects? If not, in what respects? (2) Does the equivalence theory have any limitation? Can it be applied to translating Chinese classical poetry? What is the use of understanding the limitation of equivalence theory?
