In the translation practice, especially in the translation of the two books:" Voracious News Readers" and " The translator’s guide to Chinglish", the author observed that the target equivalents are at odds with, or even contrary to the actual meaning of the source language. The author calls this deviation in meaning between source language and its corresponding target language as "non-equivalent", which is the semantic non-equivalent. This semantic deviation embodied in non-equivalent is mainly triggered by the cultural differences and the misinterpretation of the implication of the source language. In this report, the author wrote about the equivalent strategies for the semantic non-equivalent, and the ones in the aspects of culture and politics, which the latter two are the sub-categories of the first.Based on the dynamic equivalence theory of Nida, and the analysis of the non-equivalent phenomena in meaning, culture and politics, the author intended to come up with solution to the problem of non-equivalent. In this report, the approach of case study is adopted, featuring the integration of meaning and context, as well as the one of meaning and culture and the consideration on the influences of culture and politics. In this way, we can translate the equivalent words. Meanwhile, the author introduces some translation methods he used in the translation. The phenomenon of non-equivalence involves many aspects of translation, such as semantics, pragmatics, and cognition. There are still other problems waiting to be explored. For example,"dragon" seems to be the equivalent of "long(龙)", but they are culturally different.
