On The Positions In Xuanzang's Translation Workshop

Translation is usually thought to be an individual activity, while collective teamwork has existed for a long time. In China, the workshop in ancient sutra translation, Tongwen Bureau(同文馆) and Jiangnan Manufacture Bureau(江南制造局)in the Qing dynasty and Central Translation Bureau(中央编译局)in modern society, had accomplished many large translation projects that were impossible to be finished by an individual. Sutra translation in China had lasted more than one thousand years. The positions in translation workshop are closely related with factors in translation process, so the study of translation workshop can be a reference for the establishment of translation organization and the translation of large-scale works.Xuanzang's translation is acknowledged as one of the four greatest sutra translators in China and the time when Xuanzang's workshop was established is thought to be the most prosperous phase in the history of sutra translation. His workshop is comprehensively studied from different aspects in the fields of religion, philosophy, history and geography, but attracts little attention in the field of translation or there remain some doubts in its introduction.The thesis tries to point out and answer these doubts, and study Xuanzang's translation workshop on the basis of materials in Taisho Tripitaka(《大正新修大藏经》)and Zhucheding(竺徹定)'s record, as well as current achievements in the fields of Buddhism, philosophy and history in order to make some contribution to the development of collective teamwork in translation organization. The research methods used in this thesis are mainly textual research and induction.
