Taking a panoramic view of the literatures on the principle of appropriateness of speech acts in pragmalinguistics and sociolinguistics as well as in intercultural communication, we find that linguistic experts look at the principle of appropriateness of speech acts in quite different views. In fact, the observing or "flouting" of the cooperative principle, the observing of politeness principle, as well as the employment of indirect speech acts all have the goal to realize the appropriateness of speech in verbal communication. The appropriateness of speech is one of the three essential requirements for language expression â‘ . So the goal of this dissertation is to employ the speech act theory and the theory of intercultural communication to illustrate the importance of appropriateness of speech in verbal communication, and to prove that the principle of appropriateness is the "highest principle" in the realm of pragmatics, and also to illustrate the close relationship between the appropriateness of speech acts and the communicative competence.However, what are the criteria for assessing the appropriateness of speech acts? What is the importance of appropriateness of speech to foreign language teaching? This dissertation is intended to answer these questions. Chapter one presents the different views on speech appropriateness in verbal communication, and tries to illustrate the meaning and importance of defining the speech appropriateness as the highest principle in pragmatics. Chapter two tries to employ the Speech Act theory and pragmatics across cultures to point out some pragmatic failure or problems in verbal communication. Chapter three discusses the relationship between communication and culture as well as the characteristics of each term.
