This paper, which consists of six parts, makes a basic theoretical study of time adverb in modern Chinese.In preface this paper first points out the importance of the study of time adverb in modern Chinese, it also provides an overview of the status quo and problems in current study. Then, based on in-depth analysis of the problems, this paper presents its own study ideas and methods.The first chapter of the text is a basic section, which mainly discusses the definition and the extension of the time adverb. As to make a good foundation for the following study, this paper makes a classification about the time adverb from different angles.Chapter II and III is a grammatical function analysis. Naturally, as a small component of adverb, time adverb's general function is to do adverb modifier. But as to do adverb modifier it has semantic want to these verbs. Meanwhile, the paper discusses some unconventional functions of time adverb, which is different from other adverbs.The fourth chapter is a pragmatic analysis. Actually, the usage of the time adverb might change its place in the sentence for the need of expression. So in the paper we describe how the time adverb changes its place when it is used. Meanwhile, the paper provides with simple description and an explanation for the situation when the time adverb is multi-existent with other adverb modifiers.In the fifth chapter, we discusses about the semantic restriction of the time adverb. When the time adverb is used in a sentence, it is always restricted by other parts of the sentence. From the place of the semantic restriction part to the time adverb, we discuss the restriction in two categories: the front restriction and back restriction.
