A Deconstructional Exploration Of Translator's Subjectivity In Literary Translation

In translation studies, one of the fundamental questions is how to define the translator's role. Up to now, the translation theorists have never come to a unanimous conclusion as to the translator's position in translation. In traditional translation theory, the translator is defined as the "servant", and translation is regarded as the transfer on the language level. What is more, translation study is equated to the two questions of "how to translate" and "how to translate well", having the translator as the skilled worker of language transference. Therefore, the translator's subjectivity and creativity are completely neglected. However, postmodernism, whose representative is deconstruction, endows the translator with the unprecedented subjectivity and creativity. This thesis, from the perspective of deconstruction's translation theory, defines the concept of translator's subjectivity in literary translation, analyzes various forms of translator's subjectivity as well as the factors restricting them. Meanwhile, this author analyzes the translator's subjectivity, its advantages and disadvantages in translation practice, taking Lu Xun's Ah Q Zheng Zhuan as a special reference. This thesis holds a positive view of deconstruction's translation theory, asserts that translation should consider more factors outside the original text, and provides a totally new angle to see translation and translator's subjectivity.
