| The mission of this thesis is threefold: firstly, to update the state of the art in research on English-Chinese SI Quality, with contributions from Gile's'Effort Model'of SI and Communication Theory; secondly, to probe into the root of the potential problems that cause unsatisfactory English-Chinese SI Quality, particularly from the aspect of information equivalence, analyse their underlying factors, and then propound a series of coping tactics so as to effectively solve these problems; and thirdly, to do a series of experiments on several interpreters of three different levels of English-Chinese SI competence, to analyse and evaluate their SI versions from three aspects, and to prove that this package of coping tactics are applicable and effective. The potential problems that cause unsatisfactory English-Chinese SI Quality are mainly as follows: 1. Inapplicable criteria for evaluating the English-Chinese SI Quality; 2. Unsatisfactory Chinese expression that seriously undermines English-Chinese SI Quality; and 3. Information unequivalence between the original information and the information expressed by the English-Chinese simultaneous interpreter. Therefore, the author propounds the following package of coping tactics so as to effectively solve these potential problems: 1,"Completeness, accuracy and fluency"should be the criteria for evaluating the English-Chinese SI Quality; 2, Capitalizing on Gile's'Effort Model'of SI so as to improve English-Chinese SI Quality by maximizing the Production whereas minimizing the other Efforts; 3, Based on Communication Theory, the author suggests making implicit information explicit; capitalizing on given information to anticipate new information and focusing on dintinguishing and simultaneously interpreting major information instead of minor information so as to guarantee satisfactory and high quality of English-Chinese SI.Finally, the author does a series of English-Chinese SI experiments to prove that the suggested package of coping tactics can effectively solve these potential problems. |
