An Analysis Of Cognitive Load And Coping Tactics For TV Simultaneous Interpreter Based On Gile’s Model

As a very challenging form of interpretation,simultaneous interpreting has always been a focus of interpretation research.As a new branch of media interpreting,TV simultaneous interpreting(hereinafter TV SI),is the application and extension of simultaneous interpreting in TV media.With technology and media industry blooming and the global village being increasingly interconnected,as public’s demand for immediately accessing fresh global information being surged gradually,TV SI has come into being and witnessed a broader application.At the same time,the ever-growing TV SI,a more complicated working mode than ordinary simultaneous interpreting,has posed higher challenges to interpreter’s simultaneous interpreting ability,especially to energy,arousing further attention in the interpreting academia.Guided by Gile’s Effort Model,combined with the Tightrope Hypothesis and TV media,this thesis adopts the case analysis method to study interpreters’ cognitive load and its problem triggers in TV SI from four aspects: listening and analysis,short-term memory,speech production,and coordination.On top of that,this thesis will further propose linguistic and non-linguistic coping tactics for interpreters in TV SI.Specifically,linguistic strategies mainly include four aspects: reasonable anticipation for listening and analysis facilitation,syntactic linearity for memory load reduction,concision and amplification for output optimization,and flexible adjustment for coordination promotion;non-linguistic strategies mainly include improving advance preparation,extra-linguistic knowledge,TV SI skills,and anti-stress ability.Through analysis above,this thesis intends to serve as a trigger for further research on this issue,providing reference and inspiration for future practice of TV SI and encouraging interpreters to further improve the translation quality and professionalism in TV SI.
