Imbalanced Effort Distribution And Coping Tactics

Aiming at liberating people from a fixed mindset to creative thinking,the TEDxXiguan 2016 Annual Conference was held by TEDxXiguan team at Garden Hotel from 8:30 to 18:00 on the 13 th of August.The author,an MTI student,was requested to interpret simultaneously from English to Chinese for Linda Tan,a social entrepreneur who talked about how 36 stratagems could be used as a communicational tool to explain pest control strategies and Tristan Roquette,a leadership expert who focused on designing business models that would inspire the next global work culture.Based on the author's own practice and taking into account Daniel Gile's Effort Model of simultaneous interpretation,especially its Listening and Analysis Effort,Production Effort,and Memory Effort,this thesis reflected upon and analyzed English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting difficulties encountered at the TEDxXiguan 2016 Annual Conference and proposed some coping tactics for the interpreter to achieve syntactic linearity,namely segmentation,repetition and conversion.Simultaneous interpreting is an extremely difficult multi-tasking activity.Due to time constraints,interpreters should immediately operate multiple tasks such as comprehension,memory,expression,monitoring and self-correction at the same time.Overlapping multiple tasks will bring about difficulties in energy shortage and distribution of attention to the brain.Therefore,interpreters need to calmly adopt coping strategies and tactics under pressure,and endeavor to guarantee the accuracy and fluency of their output.It is hoped that this report could shed some light on how to deal with simultaneous interpreting crisis by adopting coping tactics and offer some reference to trainee interpreters or researchers who might be interested in this field.
