Simultaneous interpretation (SI) constitutes an area that has, in some ways, not been valued because of the relatively backward theories which cannot support the ground-breaking investigation into SI and the slow development of electronic equipments required for data analysis during empirical researches. Limited scholarly attention has hitherto been dedicated to the research on simultaneous interpretation compared with the lengthy history of translation study. Due to the distinct characteristics of oral communication, its interpretation follows rules radically different from the ones that guide other types of translation. So it seems rational to assume that researchers should find out a separate theory covering simultaneous interpretation in consideration of its unique nature. Of crucial interests in simultaneous interpretation study is, thus, the development of a suitable theoretic framework for the interpretation of oral texts. An approach that is consonant with a view of simultaneous interpretation as an act of communication proves to be Sperber and Wilson (2001)'s Relevance Theory, a theory which deals with communication and human cognition. Taken from the field of cognitive pragmatics, this theory was first applied to translation study by Gutt (2004). Theoretically speaking, the Relevance Theory should also be able to elucidate simultaneous interpretation, which can be considered as an act of communication on the assumption that the main goal of the speaker is to communicate her 1 conceptions, ideas, or thoughts and, thus, generate certain response to hearers and modify their assumptions of the world as a result. This paper explores anticipatory strategies in SI with a view to suggesting a theoretical framework which can be used to illustrate some guidelines in the hope of gaining better insight into prediction and developing more fruitful training methods. This study is mainly explanatory, and its objective is to account for anticipation in SI...
