This thesis, in pursuit of pragmatic theory and method, attempts to explore how pragmatic equivalence theory and relevance theory can be applied to the translation of business report so as to attain the equivalent effect between the original and translated versions and avoid to the utmost extent pragmatic failure arising in translation.In Chapter One, a general study is made of business report as a unique style. Its uniqueness lies chiefly in its forceful impact and distinct objective, which relies on the appropriate language and clear structure. In the translation of cross-cultural business report, the copywriters and translators are supposed to respect the readers of the target language and their culture it reflects.The second chapter elaborates pragmatic translation as an approach to equivalent effect. It is held by the author that equivalent effect is absolutely necessary and it tends to be the principal criterion in assessing the translation of business report. Besides, the language in use is not supposed to be in a static state. As a matter of fact, it is influenced by many factors such as meaning, context and cultural background. Thus the translator is required to pay close attention to the dynamic quality of the language. Pragmatic equivalent translation, which can be viewed from two perspectives: pragmalinguistic equivalence and social-pragmatic equivalence, aims at achieving equivalent effect between SL and TL.
